Self-Empowerment Class
One of the tools A Better LA uses are classes donated by The Pacific Institute, courtesy Pacific Institute head and ABLA co-founder Lou Tice. Companies pay thousands of dollars to send their employees through the training, but A Better LA provides the video-based classes to the community free of charge.
This self-empowerment course, called Imagine 21: Fast Track To Change, is based on breakthroughs in cognitive psychology and is designed to help residents of the community achieve their dreams. The classes are based on the premise that if we can change our thinking we can achieve whatever we want and attain breakthroughs in work, health, relationships and finances. The classes offer proven techniques for getting to the next level in all areas of life. Many find Imagine 21 to be a life-changing experience.
A Better LA offers three unique curricula tailored to adults, educators and young people. The classes generally last between 25 and 32 hours, spread out over several days.
The spectrum of students in our courses often proves to be an eye-opening experience for everyone in attendance. “I’ve had ex-gang members and ex-felons together with clinical psychologists, doctors, PhDs, pastors of churches, parents, pretty much whoever has heard about it and wants to come to it has been there,” says A Better LA Advisory Board Member and LASD deputy sheriff Ray Bercini, who has served as facilitator for many of the youth courses.
The sheriff’s department has approved A Better LA courses to serve as ongoing training for its employees to help develop their leadership qualities and better connect with the community.
Once an individual completes the Imagine 21 course, he or she can opt to return shortly thereafter to participate in a facilitator’s training program that prepares them to help us teach the classes.
“In the past, we all worked in silos, fragmented, and nobody was working together,” Bercini added. “A Better LA is drawing people in by creating a common language.”
A Better LA now aims to increase the capacity of its classes and attract additional facilitators by reaching out to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Individuals who wish to take a course can do so by emailing their name, organization and phone number to classes@abetterla.org.
