So much violence in the
inner-city is caused by a lack
of relationships, understanding,
respect and communication among
residents. Misunderstandings or
fights over things that seem
petty or trivial to most can
result in devastating violence
within certain areas.
A Better LA funds efforts to
bring people together, around
activities, food and sports, to
build relationships, respect and
communication among those who
might otherwise be at war. A
horseback riding trip is not
only fun, it can bond rivals as
they overcome the struggle of
trying something new and
difficult together. A food drive
is not only nice, but breaks
down barriers as rivals from one
neighborhood help feed families
in another neighborhood. And
late night basketball games are
not only a thrill, but build
respect and friendship among
people who otherwise might be
enemies.
Building relationships and
partnerships from within
communities is a key strategy to
making Los Angeles a better and
safer place to live.

Moonlight Basketball
When members of Unity One
suggested hosting a basketball
league in the heart of Watts for
a wide array of Black and Latino
neighborhoods, there were many
doubters. Naysayers said that
the league would only bring
violence and disappointment.
Several months later, the
naysayers were proven wrong.
Moonlight Basketball, funded by
A Better LA and the City (with a
special thanks to Councilwoman
Janice Hahn), went off without a
hitch.
There were 12 teams in the
Moonlight Adult Basketball
league, from Watts (3), Compton
and several other South LA
neighborhoods, as well as Long
Beach, East Wilmington, Pasadena
and Huntington Park (2).
The impact on the players and
community was incredibly
positive. It provided an
alternative to negative
activities between the hours of
6:00 p.m. and midnight. Players
from historically rival gang
neighborhoods were able to
compete against each other in a
safe and fun environment. It was
also great entertainment for
residents of the Watts area and
families from the participating
teams that attended.
At a banquet held in
Nickerson Gardens to complete
the league, the major theme was
the need to host this league
again and again, until this type
of community building becomes
normal life in Watts.
